First Results

Within PMinter WRF/Chem (Weather Research and Forecasting Model with Chemistry) is used for regional air quality modelling (more information about WRF/Chem can be found at http://ruc.noaa.gov/wrf/WG11/). In order to assess WRF/Chem results, test cases were simulated. Subsequently information about the setup and first results for one test case are presented.

  • Two Domains
    • Europe
      • Horizontal Resolution: 36 km
      • Vertical Levels: 28
      • Time Step: 120 s
    • Alps
      • Horizontal Resolution: 9 km
      • Vertical Levels: 28
      • Time Step: 30 s
  • Meteorological forcing: ERA-Interim (http://ecmwf.int/)
  • Emission Data: MACC (http://www.gmes-atmosphere.eu/, http://www.tno.nl/)
  • Simulation Period: 14 days (1.1.2010 – 14.1.2010)
  • Computing Time: 36 hours

The model output is shown for both domains (Europe and the Alpine Region) for 5 January 2010.
The first two figures are showing temperature at two meter height, wind at 10 m height and sea level pressure.

Europe Alps
Europe            Alps

The next two figures are showing the NO2 concentration.

Europe Alps
Europe            Alps

In the last two figures PM10 concentrations are depicted.

In the figures of the Alpine Region it can be seen that large valleys and basins are resolved in more detail. But for the purposes of PMinter, also small valleys have to be resolved (valley widths of about 3 km). Therefore simulations down to 1 km resolution will be done in future work.
